Part 2 - Session Proposal
Session Title | |||||||||||
A Unique Opportunity for DAOs in SE Asia
Session Format | |||||||||||
Roundtable | |||||||||||
Where do you plan to organize your session?
Onsite at the venue (with online moderator for questions and comments from remote participants)
Specific Issues for Discussion
We are currently working on a report as part of hosting some Cambridge University masters students as part of their capstone, who are working with us to write a report investigating the opportunities of DAOS in SE Asia. By the time this conference comes around, we should have published our findings. South East Asia has some of the world's highest adoption of Web3 technologies - cryptocurrencies, NFTs, GameFi - and could become the epicentre of this emerging technology. An underbanked, highly digital literate and increasingly universally mobile connected population are proving to be clear enabling factors for this adoption. Whilst US VC funds (most notably a16z) are investing heavily into the space, institutional appetite in Asia is less aggressive. Additionally, the regulatory and legal frameworks to mitigate new online harms, consumer protections etc. have yet to arise - specifically in the context of the region. Themes we would be looking to discuss are: 1) What are the opportunities and use-cases for DAOs in SE Asia 2) What are some of the barriers? 3) What does. an appropriate policy environment look like? Balance safety whilst enabling innovation. |

Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF
We want to explore two issues with this session: 1) the opportunity within DAOs to spur innovation and digital economic growth alongside other use case applications such as gig worker organisation, new forms of early stage funding and broader collective governance implications 2) what a regulatory approach might look like that's regionally appropriate - balancing the need for consumer protections with an approach that supports innovation and sector development This aligns strongly with both the sustainability and trust tracks for the conference. The expected outcomes for the session are: 1) To provide a space for policy-minded conversations around Web3 - and DAOs more specifically, that recognise the opportunity whilst being mindful about the harms 2) Bring perspectives on Web3 policy that are relevant and contextualised to the region 3) Open up avenues for further collaboration in the space amongst participants |

Please explain the rationale for choosing each of the above contributors to the session.
We are in the middle of conducting external stakeholder interviews at the moment, with participants ranging from regional and international VC firms, regulators, international organisations, elected officials etc. For the facilitated roundtable, our proposed panellists span a wide range of perspectives and are world-leading in their work in this nascent space. Carra Wu is an investor with specific DAO experience from the largest VC fund in the world, with the largest crypto focus. Andrew Bragg is a Senator from Australia that has specifically pushed for regulatory reform to promote innovation in crypto and DAOs. Kullarat Phongsathaporn is a Partner at Baker & McKenzie focussing specifically on the legal implications of crypto and DAOs. Yuelin Li is part of an investment DAO that specifically funds female and non-binary founders. |
