United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has noted that those without access to digital technology are denied opportunities to study, communicate, trade, shop, work and participate in much of modern life, and in 2020 prioritized the importance of digital inclusion as a global priority. Indigenous peoples have also called for their full and effective participation in the Information Age on their own terms. Much progress has been made in recent years, but there is still a long way to go before true inclusion is achieved. Digital inclusion – ensuring that technology tools and the Internet are available to all people regardless of their socio-economic status - is a key priority for equitable and inclusive development around the world. This session will highlight the challenges and opportunities inherent in efforts to build inclusion into the region’s vision for a digital economy and connected society. The panel will highlight examples of ongoing initiatives to engage underserved communities – including indigenous peoples – led by a diverse panel of the region’s digital entrepreneurs. The panel will also discuss opportunities for policy reform that can unlock greater opportunities to leverage digital tools to serve the underserved. |

Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF | |||||||||||||
With a focus on inclusivity, the panel will highlight how entrepreneurs and developers are promoting sustainable digital solutions that serve the needs of marginalized groups, and what innovation challenges these digital social entrepreneurs encounter within emerging ecosystems. The session will consist of four informal presentations, in which speakers will discuss: • Innovating in Fintech to promote formalization in India – how digital solutions can expand the formal sector through new data collection mechanisms and create trust relations with informal entrepreneurs and established financial actors. • Promoting digital skills and sparking entrepreneurship in traditionally marginalized communities in Malaysia. • Developing and sustaining innovative businesses that support women makers in Papua New Guinea. • Mainstreaming indigenous peoples’ voices in the digital economy to drive inclusive growth among Pasifika people. The session will illuminate helpful new lessons from the process of digital inclusion with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific region, and surface new insights from front-line innovators of value to the region’s digital technologists, policymakers, CSOs, activists and entrepreneurs. |

The panel will include: • Deepak Kothari, co-founder of FTcash, a fintech company in India. Established in 2015, FTcash aims to empower micro-merchants and small business owners. The platform is backed by PayPal, one of the country’s fastest-growing fintech ventures. Deepak will discuss lessons of using digital tools to bring entrepreneurs and MSMEs to the formal sector. • Vani Mahadevan, founder of Startup Malaysia and TechSprint. TechSprint is Malaysia’s first women-only coding school and Startup Malaysia is one of the main organizations promoting the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Vani will talk about the challenges and lessons of implementing upskilling initiatives within women and traditionally marginalized communities, the importance of local-based solutions, and how trainees can benefit the most from joining the digital economy. • Crystal Kewe, web and app developer based in Papua New Guinea, CEO and CTO of Crysan Technology Ltd., and member of Digital Makers Asia Pacific (DMAP) - a community of developers and entrepreneurs from APEC economies. • Riki Manarangi, Waikato entrepreneur, CEO and founder of Lonelyseat.co.nz and Director of Good Buggers Advisory. Riki is member of the Advisory Board to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand that delivered the inaugural Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Cooperation Arrangement (IPETCA), a first of its kind plurilateral arrangement that will enable economies and Indigenous Peoples to work effectively together. The panel will be moderated by Rodrigo Balbontin, Digital Economy Program Manager at The Asia Foundation. Rodrigo leads Asia Foundation partnerships with international organizations that focus on the Future of Work, and the promotion of inclusive innovation ecosystems. |
