Session Title
Who Else is Needed to Support the Adoption of Universal Acceptance?
Session Format
Panel Discussion
Where do you plan to organize your session?
Online only (with onsite facilitator who will help with questions or comments from the floor)
Specific Issues for Discussion
The standards have been in place to address community needs to support domain names and email addresses in local languages of the users. This allows for broader access and more choice to the community. A wide range of stakeholders is needed to achieve UA goals. This includes not just organizations which develop the technical tools but also the technical community which helps deploy them. However, support for Universal Acceptance (UA) of domain names and email addresses is still not broadly available across software applications, which this session will focus on. The panel will comprise specifically these different technical stakeholders who need to contribute towards supporting UA and who will share their experiences in addressing it.
Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF
“The Web does not just connect machines, it connects people”, said Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. Here in the Asia Pacific region, communities use a diverse set of languages and scripts to communicate. It is essential to support the same multilingual Internet experience for the inclusion of these communities online. The Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) and email systems allow Internet users to navigate and communicate content – thereby making it essential to have these in local languages and scripts. This not only contributes to the accessibility of the communities, but also allows them to comprehend and therefore trust these Internet identifiers. However, even though technology standards have been in place and local language identifiers implemented, the adoption of local languages and scripts in technology has been slower. UA aims to address this gap.

Please explain the rationale for choosing each of the above contributors to the session.
The panelists bring out the different roles in the adoption of UA. Mahesh will lay out current UA gaps in deployed technology, sharing quantitative data on the UA-readiness of websites globally and challenges in addressing UA in the underlying technology like Content Management Systems. Mark has been deeply involved in Microsoft’s journey to support UA, and will share his perspective of challenges in developing UA-ready tools and applications. Ajay leads a large email tools and service provider that actively supports internationalized email addresses. He will share experience in supporting technical and business related UA challenges for email addresses in local languages and scripts. For informing a broad base of the technical community, it is essential to develop and conduct technical training on relevant fora. Pensri has been involved in the UA Local Initiative in Thailand. She will discuss her experience in developing training materials and helping with the training of various stakeholders, including conducting hackathons. Each speaker will share their experience on the best way to plan and implement updates for UA, and how to address any challenges which may occur in the process. The speakers will also share on additional stakeholders they consider important to include, and the role of these additional stakeholders in supporting UA.
