Specific Issues for Discussion
The world always has consisted of a set of providers who have something to offer and then another set of consumers who need those particular offerings. Mutual discovery, trust and transaction have been a traditional challenge for both of these groups.

A very natural solution to that was the emergence of platforms as an intermediary. But such platforms fundamentally necessities a coincidental presence of both parties in their closed sphere. Thus the shortcomings of such a setup became very evident in a short time-
# The closed platforms are not a universal solution. One has to interact through multiple platforms to get the best offering
# With time, the platforms became ‘store of value’ by accumulating the reputation, data and other insights from historical transactions
# Their ‘winner takes all’ approach kills competition and hinders innovation
# Comes with a huge concentration risk

So the objective of the discussion will be to instigate a shift in the solutioning thought process. To understand if it is possible to imagine an ecosystem that works just like the internet, any seller or buyer can participate through any app and yet be discoverable and able to transact. Thus the discussion will lay the broad principles of-
# Platform to protocols
# Unbundling and interoperability
# Open networks

With that premise, the presentation will also portray how Beckn Protocol is pioneering and envisioning this change through the institutionalization of entire community-led open networks across industries and geographies. The broad areas of discussion can be-
# Architecture and the idea
# A few pilot stories (Kochi Open Mobility Network- A story of integrated urban mobility experience | Open Network for Digital Commerce- India’s own open network for commerce)
Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF
COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the digital leapfrog manifolds across the world. It has pushed small business owners and rural consumers’ digital adoption many times than estimated. However, in the due process it has given rise to many digital platforms as intermediaries. Thus the problem of discovery and participation has only aggravated to a different echelon than being solved.

The discussion will try to focus on the fact that ‘though the internet is accessible to all, the commerce on top of the internet is not’. How we can think in line with the design of the internet through open protocols to make commerce on the internet accessible to all and make it more inclusive. It will also touch upon the perspective of building trust across users and how reputation and credentialing can be decentralized to make it more transparent and acceptable.
It will also talk about different success stories across the Asia-pacific region that is emerging basis of the concept of open protocols and networks.

While open networks give birth to new opportunities for entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, and disadvantaged groups, it may also expose users to new types of challenges. The panel will highlight the evolutionary model of the concept and lay down ways for participants around the globe to contribute to that evolution and curb the challenges.
