Specific Issues for Discussion
This session brings together organisations who provide digital security support to survivors of online gender based violence. This session looks at digital security as a means to enable women and minority greater freedom of expression in a context of misogyny and heighten impunity, particularly since the pandemic Covid-19 started. As help-seeking survivors rose during the pandemic, this session aims to unpack specific needs in providing the support for women and challenges that organisations had in providing feminist informed support.
Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF
The latest report issued by UN Women and UNFPA (2021) indicates that online misogyny rose, including trolling, sexual harassment and victim-blaming since the pandemic Covid-19 started. Zooming into more specific data on women human rights defenders (WHRDs) as reported by Forum Asia (2022), WHRDs were affected in 50 out of 115 cases of vilification recorded, being a common target of sexist insults, derogatory remarks, and misogynist language. They were also also the second group of defenders most affected by online attacks, intimidation and threats. This heavily impacts women’s freedom of expression and inculcate a culture of self censorship. However, online support for survivors also increased in many forms such as online community-organised helplines. And based on Digital Defenders Partnership's reviews on online gender based violence (OGBV) helplines, while previously helplines for people facing digital attacks and emergencies are dominated by cybersecurity institutes (e.g. national CERTs and SOCs), and the fact that these institutions are primarily oriented towards minors, large companies and SMEs, feminist collectives and networks are creating community-based local helplines for people facing gender-based violence in digital spaces in various parts of the world. These initiatives are often not very visible, precarious, and do not usually have the resources they need to carry out their work in optimal conditions. This session follows this year APrIGF theme of inclusive and trusted internet, interrogating what inclusive freedom of expression participation means for women and other marginalised groups and how collective endeavours provide trusted support to recover online participation and digital safety of survivors. The session will bring together representatives from local and regional OGBV and digital attack helplines providers as well as women journalist community-support network to share their experiences and challenges in handling OGBV cases.

Please explain the rationale for choosing each of the above contributors to the session.
The contributors are selected based on their work as in providing inclusive digital security supports as well as a representative from an inclusive independent media outlet who has published extensive report on gender-based-violence affected marginalised groups. For instance, Access Now who has a helpline that provide digital security support specifically for human rights defenders serving the Asia-Pacific region while AwasKBGO who specifically provides support for survivors of online gender based violence working with an overarching community-based referral network locally in Indonesia. AwasKBGO will share how they set up their inclusive process to allow deaf and vision impaired survivors access their helpline. The next one, KRYSS Network, actively campaigns and publish resources promoting freedom of expressions of women and and gender non-conforming persons. To add specific perspective from women journalist and independent media who actively covers online gender based violence and often times helps to connect help-seeking survivors with the helpline providers, we invite Project Multatuli. Three of speakers' organisation were supported by Digital Defenders Partnership to improve their organisational safety and security and Access Now is part of DDP's network in CiviCERT. We also paid close attention to geographical and language make up of the contributors, to ensure that we are able to gather findings from as many countries as possible.
