Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are domain names that can contain characters from various scripts and languages, beyond the traditional Latin alphabet (ASCII). Implementing IDNs in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has presented opportunities and challenges. Let's explore the lessons learned, challenges faced, and opportunities created by IDN implementation in APAC. this session to be a panel bringing together perspectives from government, DNS industry, commerce and users. Questions to be addressed include: What have countries who have implemented IDNs learned through the process and what challenges remain? How can those lessons and challenges help and inform those who are yet to implement IDNs? What are the untapped opportunities that IDNs can help release? How is the consideration of requirements from IETF best managed? Does any specific country in APAC have unique information on IDN policies? |

Describe the Relevance of Your Session to APrIGF | |||||||||||||
Internationalised Domain Names enable people around the world to use domain names in their local language providing them with access to information and knowledge. They are of particular interest in the Asia Pacific region where the majority of non-ASCII script languages are situated. Many countries are considering the introduction of their own IDNs either as IDN ccTLDs or at the second level to enhance access and to improve inclusion. This panel will look at the practical challenges of IDNs from DNS industry, user and regulatory perspectives. |
